Genetic Divergence and Classification of Garlic Cultivars by Multivariate Analaysis

Abstract
This study was carried out to try the classification of garlic local and foreign cultivars by means of multivariate analysis method. The results were obtained as follows:
Only plant height and bulb height among 10 observed characters were higher in local cultivars than in foreign cultivars. Bulb weight was highly associated with all characters except No. of cloves. The number of cloves was correlated with plant height and bulb index, but it was negatively correlated with leaf width, bulb height and dry bulb weight. All tested cultivars were and non = bolting types.
In the results of principal component analysis of 10 characters, three main components (Z©û-Z©ý) could appreciate 83.5% of total variation. The first component(Z©û) was highly loaded with bulb weight, leaf sheath diameter, bulb diameter, and leaf width, the second component(Z©ü) with bulb index and No, of cloves, and the third component(Z©ý) with No, of cloves. In the single linkage cluster analysis based on 10 characters, local cultivars could be classified into 4 or 8 groups, and foreign cultivars sere classified ito 8 groups. These cultivar groups were matched with the geographical distribution.
